Goals for the session

By the end, children should be able to move in time to a steady beat, remember a short sequence of eight counts, and add one movement of their own. Coordination, listening and cooperation all improve along the way.

Choose music with a clear, steady beat and age-appropriate lyrics. Instrumental tracks avoid many problems.

Move, Shape and Freeze

Foundation · 45 min

Pupils explore travelling, turning, jumping and stillness at different levels and speeds, then create a short dance about the weather in small groups.

Pupils find and keep a steady beat with body percussion, learn basic skipping steps, and create a rhythmic skipping routine in groups.

Intermediate · 60 min

Students create a movement motif from a stimulus, then develop it with repetition, canon, unison, levels and dynamics into a short group dance.

Rhythmic Gymnastics Apparatus

Middle School · Ages 12–14

Intermediate · 60 min

Students learn basic rhythmic gymnastics skills with ribbon, ball and hoop, including spirals, snakes, rolls and throws, then create a short routine to music.

Dance Across Cultures

High School · Ages 15–18

Advanced · 75 min

Students study two dance traditions, learn a short phrase from each, analyse their features and context, and create a respectful fusion or reinterpretation.
