Science and simulations

Simulations work best when pupils have a question to answer. Before opening a PhET model, give a prediction to test, then ask pupils to change one setting at a time and record what happens.

Free activities to download

Ready-to-run EduTrend Contents free STEM teaching resources workshops for primary, middle and high school. Each free download includes a step-by-step session plan, facilitator notes, three student worksheets and an assessment checklist. Full 20-week programmes are available in EduStore.

A little girl sitting at a table with a laptop

Unplugged, Then Scratch

Primary · Ages 7–10

Foundation · 2 × 40 min

Pupils design and perform a dance algorithm unplugged, then recreate it in Scratch, seeing how the idea behind the code comes before the screen.

A man writing on a chalkboard in front of a group

Consecutive Sums

Primary · Ages 9–11

Developing · 50 min

Pupils investigate which numbers can be made by adding consecutive whole numbers, look for patterns and try to explain the numbers that cannot be made.

A teacher lecturing students in a classroom

Predict, Simulate, Explain

Middle School · Ages 11–14

Intermediate · 60 min

Students use a free science simulation, such as a PhET density model, to test predictions by changing one setting at a time and explaining the results.

A man using a tablet

Slider Detectives

Middle School · Ages 12–14

Intermediate · 60 min

Students use sliders in a free graphing tool such as Desmos or GeoGebra to discover how m and c change the graph of y = mx + c, then match graphs to equations.

A circuit board on a desk

Micro:bit Environment Logger

High School · Ages 15–18

Advanced · 90 min

Students program a BBC micro:bit to record temperature or light levels, collect data around the school, analyse it and evaluate the reliability of the sensor.
