The design cycle

Most school engineering follows a simple loop: understand the problem, imagine possible solutions, plan one, build it, test it and improve it. The loop matters more than the finished product. A bridge that collapses on the first test and holds on the third has taught more than one that works first time by luck.

Constraints make the task meaningful. A limited number of materials, a set budget in pretend currency or a size limit forces pupils to make choices and explain them.

Free activities to download

Ready-to-run EduTrend Contents school engineering workshops for primary, middle and high school. Each free download includes a step-by-step session plan, facilitator notes, three student worksheets and an assessment checklist. Full 20-week programmes are available in EduStore.

A woman and child building with colourful blocks

Tallest Tower

Primary · Ages 7–10

Foundation · 45 min

Pupils plan, build and test the tallest free-standing paper tower they can from ten sheets and tape, then improve it after seeing what failed.

A man and child building with wooden blocks

Paper Bridge Challenge

Primary · Ages 9–11

Developing · 2 × 45 min

Pupils design a paper bridge to span a 25 cm gap, test it with coins, study where it failed and rebuild it stronger.

A boy holding an electronic device part

Egg Drop Protector

Middle School · Ages 11–14

Intermediate · 60 min

Students design a lightweight device that protects a raw egg in a two-metre drop, using ideas about impact and force, and evaluate it with a score.

A girl building a toy car with concentration

Balloon-Powered Car

Middle School · Ages 12–14

Intermediate · 75 min

Students build a balloon-powered car, test distance, change one design variable at a time and explain motion using forces.

A person writing design notes on paper

Design for a Real User

High School · Ages 15–18

Advanced · 90 min

Students interview a real user in school, write a design specification, generate concepts and choose one with a weighted decision matrix.
