Start from the objective
Write the objective in terms of what pupils will do, for example "explain why a character changes" rather than "understand the chapter". Bloom's taxonomy can help here: decide whether the lesson is about recalling, applying, analysing or creating. Recall suits quick point-based rounds. Analysis and creation suit quests with open tasks and peer feedback.

Spelling Quest
Primary · Ages 7–10
Foundation · 45 min

Developing · 50 min
Teams work through five map task cards, from grid references to planning a safe walking route, moving on only when their answer is checked.

Pick the Mechanic

Pairs classify lesson objectives by thinking level and match each to a suitable mechanic: point rounds, levels, quests, team challenges or mastery checklists.

Mastery Checklist
Middle School · Ages 12–14
Intermediate · 60 min
Groups design a mastery checklist for a topic, where each item must be shown and checked by a peer before moving on, then trial it with another group.

Design and Pilot a Gamified Lesson
High School · Ages 15–18
Advanced · 90 min
Teams plan a gamified lesson using a six-step sequence, pilot it with peers, collect evidence of learning and refine the design.
