What these games develop

Keeping a beat asks children to listen, predict and move in time, which supports coordination and attention. Stopping and starting on a signal trains impulse control. Copying rhythms builds auditory memory, which also plays a part in learning to read and spell.

Movement games are useful between seated lessons, when children need to use energy and then settle again.

An adult and a little girl playing a musical instrument

Echo Rhythms

Primary · Ages 4–8

Foundation · 10 min

The leader claps a short four-beat rhythm and the group claps it straight back; patterns grow trickier and children take turns as leader.

A young boy playing a xylophone outdoors

Freeze and Shape

Primary · Ages 4–9

Developing · 15 min

Children move to fast and slow music; when it stops, they freeze in the shape on the card, such as a tall tree or a curled-up hedgehog.

A drum with a wooden stick

Found Sound Compositions

Middle School · Ages 11–13

Intermediate · 40 min

Groups explore sounds from classroom objects, compose a 30-second piece with a clear structure, draw it as a graphic score and perform it.

Loop Layers

Middle School · Ages 12–14

Intermediate · 45 min

Each student learns a short repeating pattern; a conductor brings layers in and out with gestures, building and shaping a group piece.

Music Game Leaders

High School · Ages 14–18

Advanced · 75 min

Leader teams design a 15-minute music games session for younger children with a clear stop signal, seated versions and a calm close, rehearse it with peers and critique it.
