Thinking like a scientist

The value of these games lies in the cycle of predicting, testing and explaining. Asking children to commit to a guess before they test it makes the result matter to them. When the outcome surprises them, they have a genuine reason to look for an explanation.

Recording results with ticks, drawings or tallies introduces the idea that evidence is written down and compared, not just remembered.

A girl in a polka dot jacket

Sink or Float Challenge

Primary · Ages 4–8

Foundation · 20 min

Each child picks an object, predicts sink or float on a chart, tests it in water and records the result, then the group looks for what floaters have in common.

A boy holding a red and clear plastic tool

Magnet Hunt

Primary · Ages 5–10

Developing · 20 min

Pairs predict which items a magnet will attract, test and sort them into two hoops, then test safe surfaces around the room.

A girl in a lab coat and goggles

Foil Boat Challenge

Middle School · Ages 11–13

Intermediate · 40 min

Pairs shape a boat from one sheet of foil, predict how many coins it will hold, test by adding coins until it sinks, then redesign and explain improvements.

Paper Helicopter Investigation

Middle School · Ages 12–14

Intermediate · 45 min

Pairs make paper helicopters, change one variable such as wing length, time several drops at each setting and plot results to find a pattern.

Science Game Leaders

High School · Ages 14–18

Advanced · 75 min

Leader teams design a 15-minute science games session for younger children with safe materials and a predict-test-explain cycle, rehearse it with peers and critique it.
