From talk to text

Children who can tell a story aloud with a clear beginning, middle and end find it easier to write one. Oral games let them practise structure, character and description without the effort of spelling and handwriting getting in the way. Once the story exists, writing becomes a matter of recording it.

Games also make revision feel natural. When a partner says 'I don't understand why the dragon left', the storyteller has a real reason to add detail.
